The government launched a tender to search for oil in the sea

November 9, 2018 - By Joseph Taylor

For the first time in ten years, the government will call on companies to look for oil and gas offshore. The Secretariat of Energy published in the Official Gazette the list with the conditions that must be met by companies that want to explore the Argentine continental shelf.

The call is made through the “Offshore International Public Competition No. 1” of Resolution 65/2018. The exploration permits cover around 200,000 square kilometers, represent a total of 38 blocks to be awarded and concern the Austral Marina, West Falklands and North Argentina basins.

Javier Iguacel will take advantage of his trip to Houston next week to promote this tender, in addition to Vaca Muerta.

The Argentine offshore is one of the most extensive areas with hydrocarbon resources potential globally. However, it is little explored compared to regions of similar size and potential, which constitutes an opportunity for attracting investments since it generates great expectation in companies because of its similarity with the Brazilian Pre-Salt or the Guyana coast, they indicated. from the Energy Secretariat.

In a complementary way, the exploration of the maritime platform will make it possible to gather information on seismic activity in the corresponding areas.

The last tender to explore the sea had been made in 2008, under the government of Cristina Kirchner, but had not been successful. Since Mauricio Macri took office, the then Minister of Energy, Juan José Aranguren, had anticipated the project of calling companies to explore offshore, an initiative that is medium and long term.
