August 21, 2018 - By Joseph Taylor

New hit to the pocket. As confirmed on Monday in the Official Gazette, the Secretary of Infrastructure and Water Policy convened a public hearing on November 15 to discuss another increase in the water rate. The last increase had been 26% and was applied since May 1 last.

The increase corresponds to the state company AySA and affects the users of the City and 26 municipalities in the province of Buenos Aires. The news adds to the recent increase in gas and with a record inflation in September of 6.5%, the second highest since Mauricio Macri assumed the Presidency.

The hearing will be at Tecnópolis, starting at 10 am, and it is a preliminary step to move forward with the “tariff adjustment proposal” promoted by the Government. The official resolution clarifies that the consultation procedure is not mandatory but highlights the importance of “assigning a primary place to the mechanisms that enable the participation of citizens in the formative stage of decisions, ensuring for this the fullest access to information”.

At the hearing may participate “any human or legal person, public or private that invokes a subjective right, simple interest, diffuse or related collective rights of incidence”.

The last (and only) increase in water service for that distributor had been applied on May 1 and had been 26%. Of course, that increase, according to the company had explained during the public hearing, was stipulated from the official estimates of 15% inflation for 2018, something that was long ago in the past.

At that time, AySA reported that with this increase, the average tariff for a residential user would be 208 pesos per month and per service, water and sanitation, which will mean an invoice of 416 pesos, while the minimum rate went to 130 per month and per service.

Since 2016, Aysa passed under its jurisdiction to the users of Escobar’s Buenos Aires parties, José C. Paz, Moreno, Malvinas Argentinas, San Miguel, Merlo, Florencio Varela, President Perón and Pilar, who were under the orbit of the Buenos Aires waters , the provincial service provider.
